Guardian Angels

Today, we’re gathering together as a family, brothers and sisters in Christ as well as children of the most-high God to ask for blessings on all the motorcycles here today as well as all the riders.

We all have talked about our Guardian Angels from time to time. Sometimes, we’ve even joked about them in passing, when we may be tackling a difficult task in our lives… “My Guardian Angel has her work cut out for her today!”

Yes, we have most definitely spoken of them but, if you stop and think about it for a moment, how much do we really understand about Guardian Angels: who they are, where they come from and what is their purpose here?

We all know God Loves us, His children. Why then wouldn’t He provide a means of protecting us here on earth? I’d like to take a little time this morning to tell you about some things I’ve find in our Bible that speak to the topic of Guardian Angels.

In the Bible

The idea of the Guardian Angel is actually pretty popular in our society—this is an Angel that is assigned to protect, encourage, and guide individual, faithful, human beings. It’s comforting to think that there is a presence that follows us, keeping a divine eye on our daily activities, keeping us safe and well.

The Angels are “ministering spirits,” according to the book of Hebrews—beings of great power that carry out the will of God.

But what does scripture—our source of information about Angels—say about this? Does God assign each of us an Angel? A close reading of scripture reveals that, yes—God does send His Angels down to protect and watch over us, and that it is possible that we each have our own. What is plain is that God uses His Angels for our betterment. So, take heart, and be reassured by the scriptures.

I would like to read some of these verses to you today which, most definitely, support the existence of Guardian Angels.

Personal Guardians – From Christ Himself

At one point, Jesus’ Disciples were talking among themselves wondering who would be the greatest in Heaven. After not reaching agreement, they came to Him and asked. “Teacher, who then, is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

Jesus warned them in Matthew 18:6 – “If anyone causes one of these little ones – those that believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a millstone hung around their neck and be drowned in the depth of the sea.”

After His warning he added this…

Matthew 18:10 – “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

This was Christ speaking distinctly recognizing the existence of Guardian Angels—and, as it sounds to me, those assigned to individuals. Jesus does not speak symbolically here, nor does He refer to human guardians, but to God caring for His people through angelic means.

Guardians of a Country

Daniel in the Bible, was a noble Jewish youth of Jerusalem. A revelation had come to him, given to him by “a man dressed in linen and a belt of fine gold. His face like lightening and eyes like flaming torches.” An Angel?

This man told Daniel, “Soon, I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come…

Daniel 10:21 – “However, I will tell you what is inscribed in the writing of truth. Yet there is no one who stands firmly with me against these forces except Michael your prince.”

We see here another example of the Guardian Angels. Here, we can see that God does not only assign Angels to guard humans, but to guard nations, as well. Michael, the Archangel in the passage I just read to you, is named as the Guardian Angel of the Jewish people in the Old Testament, put in charge of their affairs and well-being and here we see He will be sent to do battle against the Persians for the Jewish people.

Our Spiritual Warfare

How many of you know you are fighting battles that you might not even be aware of? Spiritual warfare is a part of reality we cannot see, but that greatly affects our lives.

The trials and tribulations put before us by the Devil are sometime unknown to us but causes great grief in our lives. What we should understand, and learn to appreciate is, to have God and His Angels fighting for us yields benefits we likely cannot imagine!

Psalm 91:11 – “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

The writer of this Psalm is recognizing God’s ability to send down help to His creations through angelic means. The faithful are under the constant care and guidance of Angels, and, given the words of Matthew 18:10 (which I read earlier), it is very possible that we each have our own specific guardian.

Since we know that bad things, at times, happen to all of us, we don’t know, exactly, in what way our Angels guard us. But that doesn’t mean that they’re not helping!

In the end, when we reach heaven, we may find that they safeguarded us from thousands of ills and troubles that we could have never imagined. Since God is all-knowing, we must assume that these Angels keep us safe in exactly the ways we need most—no more, no less. Take comfort in knowing that God has assigned an Angel to guard you in the best ways possible.

Hebrews 1:14 – “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”

This verse speaks of Angels as servants, as our “ministering spirits”. Here we can see that Angels are shown to be our protectors, beings who minister to us in opposing the power of evil spirits, and in guiding us, both spiritually and physically.

Pray for His Protection

It is important that we pray for this protection. As beings of the flesh, we have no power to combat spiritual entities. It is entirely possible to break negativity in your life through faithful prayer—God will send help to you.

Your Angel, which, as we learned earlier, always has its face turned toward the omnipotence of God, will instantly know your needs and come to your aid. Ask God, and He will give.

Psalms 34:6-7 – “This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; He saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and He delivers them.”

When we call out to God and ask for the right things that are within His will, praying as Jesus teaches us to pray in Matthew 6:9-13 (The Lord’s Prayer), God answers. He places with us a protecting Angel to guide us and keep us safe.

The Story of the Student’s Angel

Our Guardian

As we can see in this example, God does send His Angels to aid us—we may even each have our own protector assigned to watch over us from the moment we gain our faith.

These Angels are powerful, capable of defending us against spiritual attack, influencing us to be morally good, and even physically rescuing us from dangerous situations. All of these precedents are provided for us in scripture.

Remember that our ultimate guardian is God, ruler of the Angels. He is in all places at all times and knows all—He is our ever-present protector. It is through Him that the Angels receive their directives, helping we mortals throughout lives, comforting, protecting, and keeping us through His love.

Once more, why wouldn’t you believe?

In Conclusion

Remember what we’re here about today… to ask for God’s blessing and that He send His Angels down to keep us safe from harm.

1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”

One point I, personally, would like to make. I don’t think it does us any good but pushing our Guardian Angel to the limits. We need to remember to take care of ourselves as well.

Spyder always closes with, “Remember, never ride faster than your Guardian Angel can fly!” Sometimes, we simply laugh at that but, to me, it has a whole other meaning.

We’ve lost a lot of people this year. I had done a little research into many of the accidents which took our Brothers from us both locally and across the country. I have many brothers and sisters. While not all our loses were due to negligence, quite a few were the direct result of the speeds at which they may have been traveling.

Let’s face the fact. We all, as fellow motorcyclists and as brothers and sisters in Christ Love and care about one another. Sadly, but truthfully, there are a lot of people out there that simply don’t… and will not take the time to watch out for us while we ride.

Please, slow down a little. We’ve nothing to prove and, I think I speak for all the members of this church as well as our Elders and Pastors… we don’t like having to do memorials!

Take care of yourselves out there. Slow it down a little. Trust in your Guardian Angel but give them a little help. So, you may arrive 5 or 10 minutes ahead of those that refuse to slow down but, at least you will arrive.

Go with God and trust in Him; be good to one another; always stay humble; always be kind… God Bless!
