The Telephone Call

This story come from The Alliance of Hope for Suicide Survivors. This is a group of people who have suffered great loss through the untimely death of a Loved one. This group, I can honestly tell you, has literally saved my life through their kind words, patience and unending Love for each other.

A young mother had lost her husband to “The Beast” I call depression. It had been three years since he passed and it was now her daughters 5th birthday.

Lately, she was seriously contemplating moving on with her life and starting a new relationship. After all, she was young and needed a father for her daughter and a companion for herself.

She had met a man named Daniel a few weeks back. He was kind, understanding and willing to love her daughter as his own. She hadn’t discussed this at all with her daughter as, well, she was only five and probably wouldn’t understand anyway.

One evening, she had drawn a bath for her daughter and stood in front of the mirror removing the makeup and dirt of the day from her face while her little girl bathed.

Her daughter had several toys in the tub with her. A little plastic boat, a Barbie doll and a toy phone. As she was washing her face, she heard the little phone ring. Her daughter answered it and began having a conversation with whoever it was on the other end.

After several minutes of listening to her daughter’s “jibber-jabber,” she heard her say, “Okay, I love you too!” and hung-up. Intrigued, she dried her face and walked over to the bathtub.

“Who were you talking to honey?” She asked. “That was Daddy. He called to wish me a Happy Birthday and tell me he loved me.” A bit saddened by her response, she simply said, “Oh, that was nice.” and went about her chores.

After thinking for a few moments, it dawned on her, “Wait a minute… that phone has been broken some time now! It hasn’t been able to ring for about two years!”

Now, she wanted to know more from her daughter so she, once again, approached her little bathing beauty in the tub. “Honey, did Daddy have anything else to say to you?” Her daughter, now beginning to climb back out of the tub responded. “Oh yeah, I’m supposed to tell you he loves you too and he thinks Danny is a nice guy.”

Now, the mother was astounded. How could her little girl know about Dan and why was she giving her Daddy’s approval for the relationship she was contemplating.

God works in mysterious ways. Ways we often don’t even recognize. Believe in Heaven, believe in the Angels for they’re always near to us.
