The Humble and Godly Couple

There was and elderly, rich widow traveling back home from her children’s house the day after Christmas. It had been a wonderful holiday filled with Love and closeness to her children. It was snowing and very cold outside, but she was smiling, remembering the time she shared with her kids.

Suddenly, she heard a “pop” and her Mercedes started trembling on the highway. She slowly made her way to the side of the road where she parked her car. She left it running as she became frightened, not knowing what to do.

In just a few short moments, a car pulled-in behind her. This frightened her even more as she didn’t know if this was a would-be thief or someone coming to her aide. Nonetheless, she powered-down her window to see what this person had to say.

She heard the car behind her sputtering and choking as the young man inside turned off his car and was making his way out, coming towards her window. She powered it back up, so it was just slightly opened enough to hear him.

“Ma’am, it looks like you’re having a little trouble. I think I might be able to help. You’ve got yourself a flat tire here.”

Reluctantly, as she had no other option available to her, she popped the trunk and told the young man she thought she had a spare back there.

Sure enough, the young man found the spare and the tools to make his repair and started work immediately. Within just a few short moments, her tire was replaced. The young man then tapped on her window and gave her a “thumbs-up” indicating she was all set to go.

Still a little reluctant to believe someone had just helped her on a cold, snowy highway, she got out of her car to inspect his work.

She saw he had done a nice job and thanked him with a tear in her eye. “How much do I owe you young man? You’ve done such a nice thing for me, I would like to repay you.”

The young man simply smiled and said, “Ma’am, there is no need to pay me as I was just giving back for all that God has given me. If you’d like, the next time you see someone in need, I would ask that you do the same for them as I have done for you here today.”

She thanked him again and shook his greasy hand. “What is your name young man?” she asked. “My name is John, John Walter. You have yourself a nice day ma’am” was his reply.

When they had finished speaking, she got back into her car and made her way back onto the highway. She still had some way to go so, after spotting a diner on the side of the road, she made her way into the parking lot. She thought a piece of pie and warm cup of coffee would give her the energy she needed to finish her journey.

Her waitress was a sweet young girl. She looked to be about 6-7 months pregnant and was just the nicest little thing… so respectful, helpful and smiling the entire time.

“When are you due sweetheart?” the old woman asked. “Well, we’ve got about two more months before our little one comes. We’re just hoping we can raise a little money before she gets here to buy her a cradle,” was her response, still smiling radiantly.

The old woman finished her pie and coffee and asked for her bill. The sweet young waitress brought the check, thanked her for her visit and bid her farewell.

Now the old woman’s thoughts turned-back to the young man that had helped her on the road. “I would ask that you do the same,” she remembered. She laid money down on the table and made her way back outside.

When the waitress came to pick-up the bill, she found a $100 bill and a little note on a napkin inside. “You’re so sweet. I hope this helps with the crib and I wish you all the best.”

As tears filled-up her eyes, she picked-up the little booklet holding the tab and found nine more $100 bills underneath. Completely overwhelmed, she sat down right there and thanked God. “Father in Heaven, you are so merciful to me! Thank you for this glorious woman and for helping us so much!”

That night, after she and her husband had eaten and given thanks to God, they laid together side-by-side in bed. The husband, thoroughly exhausted from his busy day at the shop, fell quickly asleep.

His wife, laid there silently thinking about the generous gift from a complete stranger. She smiled, turned over giving her husband a kiss on his cheek and whispering in his ear, “Sleep well my beautiful husband, I Love you! We’re going to be okay John Walter!”
